A Haircut

They said when a girl cut her hair; she must have gone through a traumatic experience. It’s maybe true. A haircut could make you feel renewed, fresh, and different. A haircut could represent change and change could mean we are ready to move on. There is a lot of interpretation that we could make with one haircut (and I could write three more blogs about it), but if you dig deep, you could see that a haircut represents courage.

I had my first haircut when I was 16 when I decided to go for a bob. Before that, all I had ever had was a trim. I was always told that a girl should have long hair and that the shape of my face would not be fit for a short hairstyle. For 16 years, I was told the same things that I learned to accept as the truth even though I had never had the experience with short hair to see if it is true. I remembered telling my mom when I was 16 that I decided to cut my hair short regardless of what the result would be like. I remembered being so determined to see what I would look like in short hair that my mom turned to support my decision despite the warning by the hairdresser. After the haircut was done, I was the most surprised to see that the end result was not as bad as I had imagined for 16 years prior.

Getting a haircut is powerful because you would never know what is going to happen. The moment that you sit in that hairdresser chair, you can never tell what you will look like. Many things could go wrong in the process of cutting your hair. You cannot know if the hairstyle that you chose is the right fit for you or if your hairdresser could cut it the right way. All you have when you sit in that hairdresser chair is courage. The courage to believe in your decision, the courage to try that hairstyle, the courage to trust your hairdresser, and most importantly, the courage to accept the result. The courage to accept that whatever is the result of the haircut, you would accept it, learn to like it, and wait for it to grow back.

Similar to getting a haircut, life is also unpredictable. You could be scared to apply for that job you want, go for the scholarship that you have been dreaming about, or confess to that person that you have been crushing on for a long time. Regardless of what the actions are, just like a haircut, you cannot know how it would turn out. You could get the result that you have always wanted or you do not get it. However, whatever is the result, you know that as long as you have the courage, you can handle it.

So, the next time that you ever doubt yourself and your decision, think of it as you are getting a haircut. You cannot know what the haircut would turn out to be, but all it takes is your courage to believe in yourself . . .
